Apex Legends’ Mad Maggie Is Now A Tough Opponent For Gibraltar Fans

The one constant in a live service game such as Apex Legends is the change. New legends, new maps, new weapons, all in addition to updates to existing content, keep the Hero Shooter Battle Royale game feeling fresh and relevant over time. So when something stays the same for too long, especially if it’s a superpowered legend like Gibraltar, players can expect changes sooner or later.

Ever since his buffs in Season 3 Meltdown, Gibraltar has been one of the most picked high rank legends Apex Legends play. His Gun Shield passive ability protects him from most frontal attacks. His protective dome is an impregnable bubble that can give him and his team some much-needed respite. And in case enemies want to push their luck and break through Gibraltar’s defenses, its defensive bombardment punishes those who get too close. Gibraltar has been the scourge of many aggressive Apex Legends players for so long that it was only a matter of time before Respawn Entertainment brought in one of the game’s offensive legends to deal with him. This legend is Mad Maggie.

The strange salvonian

Mad Maggie is a bit eccentric when it comes to her abilities. Her passive Warlord’s Ire allows her to run faster with shotguns and momentarily highlight enemies she has damaged. While this powers his Tactical Riot Drill ability (a skill that damages enemies through surfaces), the wallhacks provided by Warlord’s Ire are very short-lived. To reach enemies in time, players must use Mad Maggie’s Wrecking Ball ultimate ability – a giant ball that leaves a trail of speed skates that can be used to quickly close distances.

With the exception of her passive ability, Warlord’s Ire, Mad Maggie’s abilities are all situational. Riot Drill is good for indoors and places with lots of cover while Wrecking Ball was only good for open spaces (to take full advantage of speed pads). Due to her abilities not syncing up well with each other, Mad Maggie quickly dropped in terms of Legend pick rate.

Step into the new season

Season 14, Hunted, introduces new buffs for Mad Maggie. His Riot Drill moves faster and can now be deployed in a nearly straight line. Wrecking Ball also travels twice as far while deploying the same amount of ground speed skates. These buffs don’t do much for Mad Maggie in general, but her biggest change has to be Wrecking Ball’s added ability to damage enemy placeables. These include things like Loba’s Black Market, Newcastle Castle Wall, and most important of all, Gibraltar’s Dome of Protection.

While Mad Maggie’s Riot Drill was something of a counter to Gibraltar’s invincible bubble, it could easily be avoided by moving to another side of the Dome of Protection. Giving Mad Maggie’s Wrecking Ball the ability to outright destroy placeable objects has the potential to increase its pick rate. While Wrecking Ball could only be used in the past to run towards or away from enemies, it can now be used to move camping players. Squads setting up Caustic’s Nox Gas Traps or Gibraltar’s Protective Dome should now beware of an incoming Wrecking Ball, as it can be used to clear an area of traps before an enemy squad enters it .

These new buffs may not make Mad Maggie worthy of being a meta legend, but they are a good step towards improving her kit. Players who make full use of her abilities can feel more like the unstoppable warlord Mad Maggie is meant to be instead of cowering with her once mediocre skills. With a little more love, Mad Maggie might prove to be a more viable choice in Apex Legends.

Apex Legends is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
