July 30 Army Assault Canine Dog ‘Axel’ gave his life in the line of duty during an anti-terrorist operation in Wanigambala, Baramulla district, Kashmir. Axel was providing services to clean a building when he was shot three times.
Alex, who was just a tan Belgian Malinois just two years old, was part of 26 Army Dog Unit. It was deployed with 29 units of Rashtriya rifles in the area of the counter-insurgency forces of the 10 sector RR. On Saturday, he and another army dog, “Balaji”, were part of the operation. Initially, Balaji was sent for an intervention in the building. He disinfected the hallway inside. After Balaji, Axel entered the first room and cleared it. However, when he entered the second room, the terrorists shot him. Apparently for 15 seconds he showed some movement but then fell.

The operation continued for some time between the troops and the terrorists. Lone terrorist Akhtar Hussain Bhat was killed during the encounter and two army officials as well as a member of the police were injured. After the 5-hour operation was completed, Axel’s remains were retrieved from the building and sent to Armed Force 54 Veterinary Hospital for an autopsy. According to reports, there were ten additional injuries and a fractured femur in addition to bullet entry and exit injuries. In a statement, army officials said his wreath laying ceremony was scheduled for Sunday by the force commander.
Well-trained assault dogs like Axel are used to break into militant hideouts. They are trained to cause fatal injuries to terrorists. Officials said Axel was an effective K9 official and had been part of several successful operations in the past.

Officials said these trained dogs, when fitted with cameras, also help determine the precise positions of terrorists as well as other details such as what weapons and ammunition the terrorists have. An official said News 18, Drones give us a glimpse of a building or house where militants are trapped, but they don’t give us details inside a house or annex. Dogs are useful and help us in operations where indoor intervention is necessary.
Axel’s trainer was shocked upon seeing his mortal remains. A video of the coach surfaced on social media where he was seen sitting next to Axel, stroking him. He said, “He took three bullets. An official said: “We had recently taken him to a dating site in the Tulibal area of Sopore. Two activists were killed there, and he did his part. The whole unit is sad.
